SoftBank Selects Huawei as a Supplier of LTE Trial
Equipment for Commercialization

TOKYO, November 7, 2008 --- SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. (hereafter ‘SBM’) announced that it has selected Huawei Technologies Japan K.K. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yan Lida) as a supplier of trial equipments for Long Term Evolution (hereafter ‘LTE’) system, a wideband mobile wireless access technology, and start a trial in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture in early 2009.

SBM made an early start on studying for commercialization of LTE, and achieved a throughput (transmission speed) of maximum 150Mbps for downlink during the indoor experiments from January to February 2008. In the trial this time, SBM is going to use a system which is similar to the commercial structure with 3 base stations, and it will evaluate performances including outdoor radio propagation, interference characteristic, throughput characteristic, mobility capability, spatial multiplex performance (MIMO*).

SBM is aiming to improve the communication technology of wireless broadband as well as to prepare for the commercial service of LTE technology utilizing the know-how and the measured data to be acquired from this experiment, and will work to contribute to the development of ubiquitous society in Japan and in the world.

  • * MIMO: Multiple Input Multiple Output. It is a technology which increases the throughput by transmitting the different data between several transceiving antennas in the same frequency.
