In this article, we introduce the latest discussions on AI-RAN orchestration within the AI-RAN Alliance, along with SoftBank Corp.’s related initiatives.

The AI-RAN Alliance has published a white paper titled “AI-RAN Platform and Infrastructure Orchestrator,” which has been discussed within WG2 (the working group focused on the “AI and RAN” use case). Based on WG2 discussions, the white paper organizes the roles and key functions required of an orchestrator to manage compute resources so that AI and RAN workloads can run efficiently on a shared infrastructure.

For SoftBank, which owns and operates the AI-RAN infrastructure, maximizing the utilization of compute resources—especially GPUs—is a critical theme. Orchestration is a core technology element in achieving this goal. Within WG2, we have led the discussions on the role, requirements, and architectural framework for orchestration. We also served as editor of the white paper and played a central role in its development by consolidating input from a diverse range of member companies, including RAN vendors, semiconductor vendors, and mobile network operators. Reflecting the outcomes of these discussions, the white paper provides a reference architecture for AI-RAN orchestration.

As one concrete approach to realizing this vision, we have been developing the AITRAS Orchestrator [1]. The AITRAS Orchestrator is a component responsible for managing infrastructure resources and enabling orchestration aimed at maximizing the effective use of compute resources, including GPUs. Its design aligns with the system architecture of the AI-RAN Platform and Infrastructure Orchestrator defined in the WG2 document.

At MWC 2026, we plan to showcase the design and operation of the AITRAS Orchestrator through a demo video at the AI-RAN Alliance booth. If you will be attending, we look forward to seeing you there.
