Lippo Karawaci CEO John Riady and SoftBank Corp. Vice President and Head of Global Business Strategy Hidebumi Kitahara announce their cooperation in Jakarta

PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk, the largest listed property company in Indonesia, and SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) held a joint press conference at the Aryaduta Hotel in Jakarta on November 28, 2019 to announce an agreement that will bring AI- and IoT-based solutions to Indonesia.

As a first step, Lippo Karawaci and SoftBank plan to bring new AI and IoT technologies to “Lippo Village,” a township with a population of 70,000 that is located 23 kilometers west of Jakarta. Smart traffic management—enabled by smart CCTV cameras that will count and categorize vehicles to collect data for optimizing traffic flows—will be a key part of the project. In a region well-known for its traffic jams, smart traffic management solutions will greatly improve the quality of life for township residents. The companies also plan to implement AI- and IoT-based solutions for security, retail and hospital applications at Lippo Village.

More projects on the horizon

Executives from Lippo Karawaci and SoftBank expressed excitement about making Lippo Village a model Smart City in Southeast Asia. Lippo Karawaci CEO John Riady said, “Real estate companies must think about how they breathe life and soul into buildings, and a key part of being able to do that is by applying technology. Technology will help us enhance the customer experience, improve the security of our developments and cut costs.”

Both were also excited at the prospect of working on additional smart city projects. SoftBank's Vice President and Head of Global Business Strategy Hidebumi Kitahara said, “Indonesia is growing very quickly with a lot of energy. So we believe there will be lots of opportunities where we can improve things together.”
