As reported earlier by SoftBank News, PayPay Corporation—a leading financial services provider in Japan with its “PayPay” cashless payment service and a SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) group company—began offering “Overseas Payment Mode” to its customers in Japan, starting with South Korea on September 30, 2025. From from late April 2026,* PayPay will launch Overseas Payment Mode at another popular destination for Japan’s outbound travelers, Taiwan.

Launch date subject to change.
Travellers from Japan will be able to make payments with “PayPay” at places displaying the “TWQR” logo. Furthermore, when using Overseas Payment Mode, they will be able to check amounts paid in Japanese yen at a glance. In conjunction with the launch in Taiwan, a new exchange rate calculator has also been added, so customers can use “PayPay” in Taiwan with the same convenience they experience in Japan.
“PayPay” can be used at approximately 400,000 locations across Taiwan

Since launching Overseas Payment Mode in South Korea in September 2025, customer demand for its availability in other countries and regions has been on the increase. In Taiwan, “PayPay” payments can be made at more than approximately 400,000 locations, including convenience stores, restaurants and other merchants through the international network of HIVEX®, a high-performance, secure, multinational distributed ledger technology network provided by TBCASoft, a company that SoftBank has invested in.
About HIVEX®
HIVEX® provides a better user experience by offering mobile payment service providers (MPSPs) common business rules, system integration, consistent and neutral branding, and greater scalability at the commercial level. By integrating with HIVEX®, cross-border payments that were previously unworkable are now possible.
Discounts offered at convenience stores

In conjunction with the launch of this service, discounts for PayPay users are scheduled to be provided at Taiwan FamilyMart and HiLife, both major convenience store chains in Taiwan. In addition, preloaded EasyCards—transportation IC cards that can be used on trains and buses in Taiwan—are scheduled to be offered at airports in Taiwan for purchase with the “PayPay” app.
As in Japan, payments made in Overseas Payment Mode support both consumer-presented mode (CPM) and merchant-presented mode (MPM), as well as payments with the red screen (PayPay Balance) and the blue screen (PayPay Credit). When making a purchase, users can pay at stores by just showing the payment screen of the PayPay app to cashiers, which will display a payment request written in the local language.
If users have completed identity verification (eKYC) in Japan before they travel, their “PayPay” app will automatically switch to Overseas Payment Mode after they arrive at their destination.*

Users must agree to the Terms of Use. For details on identity verification (eKYC), click here (in Japanese). Identity verification cannot be completed overseas for security reasons and therefore must be completed before departure.
PayPay will continue to expand its services outside Japan so that customers can make payments anytime and anywhere with the “PayPay” app.
