After first announcing its “AI-RAN” concept in 2023 as a foundation for next-generation mobile networks to support a society that coexists with AI, SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) has made significant progress in bringing its vision to reality.
On November 13, 2024, SoftBank issued a series of announcements regarding its AI-RAN development, including the realization of a high-performance, carrier-grade virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) on the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip, the development of an orchestrator capable of operating both vRAN and AI on the same virtualized platform, and an AI-RAN solution called “AITRAS” for deployment within its own commercial network and to telecommunications operators, both domestically and internationally.
