On January 22, 2025, MONET Technologies Inc.—a joint venture with SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434), Toyota Motor Corporation and other Japan-based automotive manufacturers—launched an autonomous mobility service that runs on the public roads of Tokyo Waterfront City, a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay. The service, which MONET plans to provide until mid-March for the general public, uses Level 2 self-driving, which sees a vehicle control steering, acceleration and deceleration while a human sits in the driver’s seat if there is a need to take over control.
MONET Technologies’ autonomous mobility service is using two Toyota Sienna minivans to serve 5 stops in Tokyo Waterfront City: Kokusai-tenjijo Station, Tokyo Teleport Station, Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center), Daiba Frontier Building and City Circuit Tokyo Bay. Passengers can reserve rides on demand by using the “MONET” app at no charge. Each minivan can seat up to five passengers (not including the driver).
For more details on the service and instructions for downloading the “MONET” app, please visit MONET’s dedicated website (in Japanese).
