How AGI Differs from Traditional AI

How AGI Differs from Traditional AI

With rapid technological advancements, artificial intelligence, or AI, is now becoming a part of our daily lives. In addition to traditional AI, the term "AGI" is now entering common parlance.

At this year’s SoftBank World, SoftBank's largest event for enterprise customers, AGI was mentioned in a keynote as a technology that will impact every industry imaginable within the next 10 years.

What’s the difference between AGI and traditional AI? Read on to learn about how AGI could benefit business, and another key term, “ASI.”

What is AGI?

AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence. It refers to artificial intelligence with human-like, general-purpose intelligence. AGI uses knowledge and cognitive abilities similar to a human when performing tasks and has the capability to learn and solve problems independently.

    • General-purpose abilities

AGI has the ability to handle various tasks and problems, utilizing a diverse range of knowledge and skills.

    • Learning abilities

AGI can learn from experiences and evolve by integrating new information and data to make appropriate responses and solve problems according to different situations.

    • Decision-making abilities

AGI can make its own decisions and judgements. It has the ability to analyze complex information and select the best options.

How is AGI different from traditional AI?

How AGI Differs from traditional AI

Applications using traditional AI are specialized for specific tasks or problems, such as image recognition or voice recognition, and they primarily operate within a limited range. They learn rules and patterns from vast amounts of data to execute tasks within a defined scope.

AGI, on the other hand, with its general-purpose intelligence, can handle multiple tasks. It learns from data and experiences, incorporating new information and knowledge to make appropriate decisions in different situations, much like a human does, in a flexible manner.

Due to these differing characteristics, traditional AI is sometimes referred to as "weak AI," while AGI is called "strong AI."

While AI is optimal for data processing, with the advent of AGI, market forecasting, competitive analysis, and the development of new business models will become possible, potentially transforming society and industry. This may, in turn, bring the world into an age of “Artificial Superintelligence,” or ASI.

ASI refers to artificial intelligence that surpasses the capabilities of human intelligence for every task and problem. ASI is said to be capable of learning and evolving on its own, dramatically enhancing its knowledge and abilities. As such, it could find solutions to problems that are difficult or impossible for humans to solve.

What changes will AGI and ASI bring to society in the future? As these forms of AI become a reality in the not-too-distant future, it is imperative for humanity to deepen its understanding about these new forms of AI.
