Cubic Telecom, a global leader in software-defined connected vehicle (SDCV) solutions, officially joined SoftBank Corp.’s (TOKYO: 9434) group of companies on March 6, 2024.
Working with the world’s leading automotive, transportation and agriculture original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the company delivers advanced SDCV solutions around the world. And with its software embedded in vehicles at the point of manufacture, Cubic Telecom helps OEMs improve vehicle performance, safety and comfort over extended periods of time with over-the-air (OTA) updates.
This wireless connectivity needed to enable these OTA updates relies on ground-based terrestrial networks (TNs). However, coverage gaps in TNs continue to exist, especially in remote areas. Looking ahead to the next decade, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) in the sky are set to play a pivotal role to ensure that vehicles are fully connected because they can reach areas that TNs cannot.
In preparation for the 6G era, SoftBank is working to build a “Ubiquitous Network” that combines TNs and NTNs, including satellite- and stratospheric HAPS-based solutions. In addition, SoftBank and Cubic Telecom are exploring ways to utilize NTNs to provide seamless connectivity to vehicles.
