SoftBank Corp.’s (TOKYO: 9434) Research Institute of Advanced Technology, in collaboration project with artist Daito Manabe and Laboratory of Yoshiho Ikeuchi at the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, have been conducting research on a “Brain Processing Unit” (BPU).
In June 2025, the groundbreaking research project received an Honorary Mention at the "S+T+ARTS (Science, Technology and the Arts) Prize 2025" competition organized by the European Commission (EU Commission).
The jury commented, “This project explores a new frontier of creativity using the BPU—a biological processor made from lab-grown brain organoids, going beyond classical computing, which values logical optimization and reproducibility.”
The SoftBank Research Institute of Advanced Technology also published a white paper in June with details on the BPU research project. Learn more about the Honorary Mention and the white paper here.
