SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) held its 40th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM) on June 23, 2026, at the Tokyo International Forum. President & CEO Junichi Miyakawa chaired the meeting, and after reviewing SoftBank’s business progress, strategy and answering shareholder questions, three proposals – 1) to elect thirteen board directors, 2) to elect two audit & supervisory board members, and 3) to elect one substitute audit & supervisory board member – were approved and adopted.
“Osaka Sakai Activation Base” to serve as hub for next-generation social infrastructure
Following the showing of a Business Report video that reviewed SoftBank’s business results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 (FY2025), Miyakawa explained the new Medium-term Management Plan to shareholders.
“After making various AI investments, we’re now entering a harvest phase,” he said, noting three new financial targets: consolidated operating income of 1.7 trillion JPY and consolidated net income of 700.0 billion JPY in FY2030, and continuous dividend increases from FY2026 to FY2030.
Anticipating a future where AI will be embedded in all things, Miyakawa said that SoftBank will leverage the Information Revolution to pursue further growth opportunities. These key areas for growth include the neocloud business, AI computing platforms, AI data centers, innovative batteries, next-generation memory, and non-terrestrial networks (NTN).
Miyakawa used a video to explain that SoftBank is building a new “Osaka Sakai Activation Base,” which will serve as a core hub for next-generation social infrastructure that houses an “AX Center” and a “GX Center.” The AX Center will manufacture a wide range of technologies and hardware for HAPS, satellite technologies, AI-RAN technologies and telecommunications equipment, next-generation memory technologies, and GPU servers and related hardware. The facility will also house one of Japan's largest AI data centers, providing the computing power needed to meet rapidly growing demand for AI processing.
The GX Center will be dedicated to enabling a sustainable next-generation AI society, serving as a development and manufacturing base for innovative batteries and next-generation solar panels.
“At Osaka Sakai Activation Base, we’ll also assemble AI servers to meet the needs for domestically produced AI servers,” he said. SoftBank will aim to start production in FY2027, he noted.
Preparing for HAPS services in Japan
Miyakawa also gave an update on the progress of the HAPS business, noting that the HAPS platform it plans to use conducted a test flight that began on March 25, 2026, in New Mexico, USA, and ended successfully on April 7 off the coast of Natal, Brazil. “We’re now preparing to conduct trial services here in Japan within the next two to three months,” he added.
In closing, Miyakawa said, “By centering our efforts on next-generation social infrastructure, we aim to become a leading AI platform provider and further enhance corporate value.”
Achieving high thermal efficiency at data centers and reducing power consumption at base stations
In addition to questions sent in advance, questions from shareholders were taken at the meeting venue and from those watching online. One asked about what measures SoftBank is taking to address heat generated by data centers.
Miyakawa explained that while data centers generate large amounts of heat, advanced technologies have emerged to address this challenge.
“Our new data center under construction in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido Prefecture, has extremely high thermal efficiency and an excellent Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating,” he said. “One of the reasons we selected Hokkaido is its naturally cold climate. During winter, operating efficiency improves even further.”
Another shareholder asked about what SoftBank is doing to reduce power consumption at its mobile base stations.
“Base stations account for about half of the company's total electricity consumption, so this is a topic we discuss extensively,” Miyakawa said. “To meet our goals of achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions, we’re installing solar panels at base stations to generate electricity on-site, and some base stations have also begun using wind turbines recently.”
“The most effective solution, in our view, is battery technology,” Miyakawa added. “Although batteries are costly, we’re developing the capability to manufacture them ourselves. By deploying our own batteries at base stations, we expect to achieve even greater efficiency.”
Before the close of the AGM, Miyakawa welcomed incoming directors and expressed his appreciation for outgoing directors.
