SOFTBANK BB and Oracle Japan Collaborate to Provide "Utility Computing Service" Broadband IP network combined with "Oracle 10" To create next-generation computing environment

SOFTBANK BB Corp. (Head office: Chuo-ku Tokyo; President & CEO: Masayoshi Son; hereinafter "SOFTBANK BB") and Oracle Corporation Japan (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Masaaki Shintaku ; hereinafter "Oracle Japan") are pleased to announce their collaboration in the creation of a "Utility Computing Service."

SOFTBANK BB provides broadband infrastructure and services over its robust backbone, of "Yahoo! BB," which boasts Japan's largest broadband subscriber base. The company is now creating content and application services to enable the ideal of vision, broadband IP networks, working towards an ideal of "Utility Computing."

The "Utility Computing Service" consists of advanced network monitoring and IP session management developed by SOFTBANK BB, using pure IP networks without ATMs as well as "Enterprise Grid Computing" delivered by Oracle to create and operate large systems at low costs.

Collaborating to create "Utility Computing Service"

1.Enable integration of infrastructure with Utility cmputing and reduce management costs

  • Integration of SOFTBANK BB service infrastructure and customer billing management
  • Centralized management for reduced operational costs

2.Develop commercial "Utility Computing Service"

  • Provide application and contents on demand service with "Enterprise Grid Computing"environment.

3.Develop utility computing service for Enterprise to provide on-demand computing services with "Enterprise Grid Computing".

  • Online storage service (support for integration of company file systems)
  • Online publishing services (catalog etc. printing, publishing support system)
  • Digital archives (storage of photographs and video footage)

4. Provide application development environment with Utility computing.

  • Development environment that supports the creation of a wide range of content and application services

About newly established

"Utility Computing Promotion Office" SOFTBANK BB and Oracle Japan have established a "Utility Computing Promotion Office" to begin collaboration on this service.

Roles and responsibilities

SOFTBANK BB will provide the network datacenter required to create the "Utility Computing Service." Oracle Japan will provide the "Oracle 10g" product and technical support.

Utility computing is the idea of providing computer assets to companies in much the same way as electricity, water and other traditional utilities.

"Oracle Database 10g" is designed for efficient performance in any environment from the smallest server to a largest SMP configuration, and works equally well in both clusters and enterprise grids. Automated tuning and management functions enable worker efficiency gains and cost reductions. The system natively stores everything from business information to OLAP, XML documents, and spatial and positioning information, with support for on-line transaction processing, business intelligence, data warehousing and content management applications.
